Academic assessment evaluates students' academic performance in the General Education Program and the major programs of study.  It answers the question:  How do we know that students are accomplishing the established goals and objectives for their academic studies?

bulletThe General Education Program assessment is administered by the University Assessment Program; contact Dr. Jian R. Sun at assessment@rio.edu
bulletMajor Field Tests for Major Programs of Studies are administered by faculty in the areas of studies; contact your academic advisor.
bulletIndividual courses assessment is administered in individual courses; contact your course instructors.
bulletOther non-academic assessment activities are administered by the Student Service division; contact Dean of Student at 245-7454.

How is assessment conducted?

*  Academic assessment takes place in three main categories:
bulletThe General Education Program assessment (required of all students)
bulletMajor Programs of Studies (vary in different programs/departments)
bulletIndividual courses

*  Other (non-academic) assessment activities may include the following:
bulletstudent satisfaction survey (given by the Student Services division)
bulletmulticultural survey (given by the Multiethnic Affairs Office)
bulletother survey (alcoholic survey)

When are assessment activities conducted?

*  The General Education Program assessment can be taken (contact Bev McManus, CARS Office at 740-245-7279, or e-mail at bmcmanus@rio.edu for specific date/time) when a student has completed over 75-80% of his/her required General Education Program courses.

*  Major Programs of Study assessment takes place in the senior year;

*  Individual course assessment takes place during the quarter when that course is being taken.

bulletOther surveys may be given during Fall quarter or Winter quarter.

Where to take assessment activities?
bulletThe General Education Program assessment takes place in the Learning Center in Wood Hall;
bulletAssessment in Major Programs of Studies takes place in locations announced by individual programs/departments;
bulletAssessment for individual courses takes place in each classroom.

What is used for conducting those assessment activities?
bulletThe General Education Program assessment: The Academic Profile, COMPASS, and other supplementary assessment instrument;
bulletMajor Program of Studies assessment: Major Field Tests, NTE (for teachers), NCLX (for nursing), SWSLE (for social work)
bulletIndividual course assessment: test, quiz, paper, or project
bulletstudent satisfaction survey
bulletmulticultural survey
bulletother surveys
